Dear JA Supporter,

The summer heat wave is quickly upon us, and as we finish another school year, we thank you for all that you've done to help us reach Chicago area youth with JA's economic education programs - we're on track to reach over 390,000 students before the end of the school year!

Due to your generous financial support and volunteerism, JA is wrapping up the last few classroom lessons and the entire school year on a powerful note, sustaining our youth and creating a solid foundation for years to come. As we all know, pleasant and warm Chicago days only last so long - but here at JA, we're preparing students with the knowledge and skills needed to make the leap from "summer break" to "coffee break" with ease. The financial literacy and work readiness skills young people gain through JA will empower them with the strength, stability, and tools to thrive in today's uncertain economic conditions.

All too often, spring and summer days fade from memory as soon as winter nears, but your support in helping local students become capable, successful adults will benefit them their entire lives. So whether you're a volunteer, educator, board member, contributor, or program partner, your participation this school year has been greatly appreciated!

We sincerely hope you will continue to join us in our mission, helping prepare youth for adulthood success!

Sincerely,
Sandy Daffé

President, Junior Achievement of Chicago

JA Awards $100,000 in Scholarships to Local Graduates

Kids dream of college in different ways: while some may see it as an excuse to move far away or escape from their parents, many view a post-secondary education as a gateway to prepare for exciting fields that they can enter in adulthood.

Yet, sadly, even today, some see it as just that
- a dream unlikely to reach fruition - as many students don't have the financial means to reach college or the mindset and preparation to see its true value.

scholarshipsAt JA, our belief in the importance of pursuing post-secondary education has led us to infuse our programs with a strong emphasis on the benefits and success that come with staying in school.  We're doing all we can to show students from a young age that their education is within reach, and that it has a huge impact on their adulthood success!

To make some of these college dreams a reality, on May 12th, JA Chicago took time to reward 22 outstanding students for their high school success and for their ability to master the concepts of JA's programs to reach their goals. We gave out these scholarships to help local young people get all that they can from their college experience, providing almost $100,000 to help further their education.

JA's Day at the Races Hits the Trifecta!

JA's 16th annual "Day at the Races" was held at Arlington Park on Thursday, May 20th
, 2010. From the first call of the trumpet to an exciting photo finish on the last race, the day was a resounding success.
DAR 2010
More than 400 people attended this exciting event, which raised over $145,000 for JA! Because of these efforts, over 9,000 students will now benefit from JA's financial literacy, economic education and workforce readiness programs!

We'd like to thank all who attended and contributed - you truly helped JA reach the "winner's circle!"  To see the full list of the event sponsors and the great items donated for our live and silent auctions, view the

JA's Wine Tasting Celebrates "La Dolce Vita"!

JA's economic education programs are the usual means by which we open doors to a promising future for Chicago youth; at a recent event, however, it was a corkscrew that was the key to our success! JA's Central Division Board recently held the 6th Annual Wine Tasting on April 29th at Tishman Speyer to support JA programs taking place within the city.

Just as many fine wines are bottled on site, JA staff did everything possible in-house to make the afternoon a sparkling success. For the first time, JA was able to hold its event at an empty space, filling it with donated furniture, food, wine, and lighting, to ensure a majority of proceeds directly benefit JA classrooms. Students from different organizations even provided the decorations, designing banners that revealed how much JA means to them.

Over 260 people attended and toasted JA Chicago while sampling different wines and reconnecting with friends (see event pictures). Guests lived "la dolce vita," being escorted through a tasting journey of various Italian wines in the capable hands of Sommelier Kristin Milles. In between sips, guests checked out some of the amazing auction items that were designed to please any palate. These included comedy and theater tickets, restaurant and wine packages, and even sports memorabilia from professional athletes like Chicago Blackhawks' Patrick Kane.

In great wine, many complex flavors unite to create a bold and lasting impression - similarly, many came together to organize and support this wonderful event, which raised over $15,000 for JA programs. Cheers to all those who helped make this event possible!
