Lauren Polito was a JA Company Program student at Barrington High School in Barrington, IL from 2013 to 2014.  She began in the role of VP of PR, when the company sold greeting cards, and moved to VP of Production her senior year, when the company sold dyed socks. “It was so great to see the community want to help,” she says of the volunteers and customers.

From JA, Lauren learned how to sell a product. Though it was difficult, she enjoyed building the people skills. She also learned about time management and team building skills. It was stressful at times, but it complimented what she learned in school. The current PR and Advertising major at DePaul University in Chicago also particularly enjoyed the hands-on experience in PR.

While in high school, Lauren also attended the JA You’re Hired! events, saying, “they were super cool!” She gained networking skills and appreciated that is was a professional environment where the volunteers “didn’t treat us like kids.”

Lauren continues to stay in touch with one of JA Company volunteers from Pepsi- he even wrote her college and JA scholarship recommendations! “Thanks to JA, I have it all figured out! I was able to study what I wanted to do and that set me apart from the competition.”

After college, Lauren hopes to work in PR at an agency and develop her writing skills. Her advice to current high school students is to “be conscious of what you’re spending and work toward large financial goals.”
